about

1965 - Ah! Such a prescient title! In '65, Norman was growing increasingly cheesed off with his 'lone wolf howling in the wilderness act', so this song was a last gasp attempt to grab his rightful slice of the pie. He'd heard a young Welsh blues singer named Tom Jones and pitched this as the first single to manager, Larry Parnes. Musically, it fell right back into his British jazz roots, but this time with a little bit of Latin heat thrown in for good measure. Lyrically, he later recalled, it spoke of the traumatic end of a childhood friendship. Anyway, Parnes (Shillings and Pence!) didn't fancy it, collared It's Not Unusual for the 'Elvis of the Valleys' and who's to say he was wrong?
